Oklahoma Democrats Celebrate Reversal of Walters-Era Bible Mandate
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Today, State Superintendent Lindel Fields announced that his administration will not pursue Ryan Walters' plans to put bibles in Oklahoma public schools. The Oklahoma Democratic Party celebrates this reversal and reaffirms our belief in religious liberty, from the schoolhouse to the State House.
Oklahoma Democrats strongly encourage State Superintendent Fields to stay his course on reversing unpopular, unconstitutional mandates from former State Superintendent Ryan Walters. From the Bible mandate, to MAGA-first loyalty tests and other unfunded mandates, these decisions place unfair and unsustainable pressure on our already-struggling public schools system.
John Waldron, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, spoke on the announcement, declaring, "Hallelujah! A victory for separation of Church and State, and for protecting our kids' right to pursue their own faith as individuals with their families."
Teaching religion is a personal conversation that should happen at home within families, not in school through government mandate. The issue is blatantly unconstitutional, and Superintendent Fields was right to make this decision.
