MEDIA ADVISORY: Democrats Win Historic Gains in Oklahoma House

Oklahoma City, OK — After 16 years of failure led by the Republican Supermajority, voters spoke loudly that it’s time for new leadership at the State Capitol with the largest shift in power at the State House in over a decade.

Oklahoma Democrats’ hard work, state-wide organizing and strategic candidate recruitment led to historic victories across multiple counties.

“We’re so proud of Representatives-Elect Gilmore, Gau, Perez, Malone, Watkins, and Suttles* who will join the State House at the State Capitol. These new Democratic legislators move us closer to breaking the Republican supermajority and give us more votes and voices to advance good policy,” said Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair, Erin Brewer.

1. Chaunte Gilmore ousted a Republican incumbent OKC/Bethany in HD - 100

2. Dalton Gau ousted a Republican incumbent in OKC /Edmond HD - 83

3. Jeffrey Perez ousted a Republican incumbent in OKC HD - 84

4. Tegan Malone ousted a Republican incumbent in Midwest City HD - 95

5. Joe Watkins ousted a Republican incumbent in Tulsa HD - 75

6. We have enough Election Day results to project a victory for Kathy Suttles*, who will win an open seat in Lawton in HD - 64, with the confirmation of Early Voting & Absentee Votes still pending.

Party Vice Chair Representative Ron Stewart stated, “Tonight’s gains are worth celebrating, not just for Oklahoma Democrats, but for the State of Oklahoma as a whole. Growing our caucus brings more balance to the Legislature, strengthens accountability, and gives more communities a voice at the Capitol. I’m excited about what we can accomplish for working families, public schools, healthcare and the future of this state. More balance means better debate, and better debate leads to better decisions for all Oklahomans. Oklahoma won tonight.”

Either Chair Brewer or Vice Chair Representative Stewart (HD-73) are available for further press and inquiry at the Oklahoma Democratic Party Headquarters, available to join at the studio tonight or tomorrow, or by phone.

We are still monitoring historic over-performances and close races for Democratic candidates throughout the State.
