A Republican Shutdown is Bad for Oklahomans

Oklahoma City, OK - Donald Trump and Oklahoma Republicans passed the largest cut to health care in history, under which 320,000 Oklahomans will be kicked off their health insurance. These healthcare cuts mean Oklahomans’ insurance plans will become more expensive, our state government will be responsible for nearly a billion dollars more a year in Medicaid costs, and at-risk hospitals across the state could be pushed over the edge and close. Now, Trump is creating another crisis.

After Trump said, “Don’t even bother dealing with [Democrats],” he’s learning the hard way that Democrats don’t work for him.

Last week, Democrats made our position clear. House and Senate Democrats presented a proposal that would have reversed the cuts to Medicaid and ensured Americans’ health premiums don’t go up by 75% in January. Oklahoma Republicans in the House and Senate oppose this proposal, and are ready to go full steam ahead with the largest healthcare cuts in history.

Make no mistake: This will be a Trump Shutdown. Trump and his Republican lackeys own this.

In response, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair John Waldron released the following statement: “Oklahomans stand to lose big in the unnecessary government shutdown, whether it’s in food benefits for children, storm prediction, or medical care for veterans. And 40,000 Oklahomans will lose federal paychecks until it ends. What is our congressional delegation doing to stand up for hard-working Oklahoma families? The Oklahoma Democratic Party calls for leadership that will look out for our interests in Washington.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party has successfully recruited more candidates at this point in the election cycle than in the last decade. All five Republican-held Congressional districts, and Markwayne Mullin's Senate seat, all have Democratic challengers on the ground doing the work to send them packing.

The Oklahoma Democratic Party will not support a Republican budget that cuts healthcare for over 300,000 Oklahomans, obliterates natural disaster detection and response funding, and undermines food security for our children.
