Oklahoma Democrats Outperform Expectations in Special Elections

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Yesterday’s special elections delivered a strong message: Democratic momentum in Oklahoma is growing, and voters are ready for a change. In two special state House races, HD71 and HD74, Democratic candidates dramatically outperformed expectations, continuing a trend of beating previous margins and energizing voters across the state.

Amanda Clinton secured a decisive victory in House District 71, a Tulsa-area seat previously held by a Democrat since being flipped in 2018 by Denise Brewer. Clinton’s win is especially significant she outperformed Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2020 numbers in the district by a staggering 50 points.

“This wasn’t just a win,” said Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Alicia Andrews. “It was a statement. Amanda Clinton’s campaign showed that when we focus on the issues that matter education, healthcare, jobs Oklahomans respond.”

In HD74, Democratic candidate Amy Hossain also showed strength, outperforming 2020 Democratic numbers by 12 points. And in May, Nathan Brewer, running in Senate District 8, improved the Democratic margin by 19 points, continuing the momentum seen in special elections across the state. Democrats retained HD97, which was decided in the primary, won by former judge Aletia Timmons over Jekia Harrison.

“These are not isolated results. They are proof of a pattern,” said Andrews. “Oklahomans are growing weary of a legislature more obsessed with political theater than practical solutions. Voters are responding to Democratic candidates who speak to their lived realities.”

As the 2026 election cycle approaches, the Oklahoma Democratic Party is poised to build on these gains. With candidates who reflect their communities and policies that reflect real priorities, Democrats are ready to compete and win across Oklahoma.
