OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Yesterday, the Trump Administration announced a $12 billion bailout package designed to alleviate the pain of the Administration’s failed tariffs on American farmers. We continue to stand with Oklahoma farmers as they navigate one of the worst trade economies in recent history. We especially express our solidarity with the nearly 125,000 producers, running 68,000 local farms and ranches across Oklahoma, who are all enduring this crisis.
The Trump Administration’s plan, while providing immediate relief to Oklahoma farmers, ignores the larger issue: Trump’s hostile trade policy, from tariffs to trade wars, with our largest agricultural importing partners is leaving our farmers out to dry, and a bailout is just another bandaid.
Following a letter from Congressional Democrats calling for a significant portion of the funds to be carved out for small and medium farms, and the Administration’s failure to implement the policy, this plan primarily favors large, corporate farms and Big Ag over 97% of farms in Oklahoma, which are owned by hardworking, local families.
“Oklahoma Democrats believe in rural Oklahoma,” said Chair Erin Brewer. “The truth is, Oklahoma farmers don’t need aid, they need trade, and this Administration’s policy misses that mark entirely.”
The Republican Party has a long-standing track record of siding with corporate farms over family farmers, from Governor Stitt to the White House. The Oklahoma Democratic Party will continue to push for reform that keeps commodity prices competitive, ensures our producers have a market, and retains family operations beyond the current generation.
