Todd Goodman's Statement on DADT Repeal

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 18, 2010

Oklahoma Democratic Party Chairman Urges the Senate to Repeal ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’

This week, the House passed legislation that would repeal the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. This weekend, the Senate is expected to vote on repeal legislation. In advance of that vote, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Todd Goodman released the following statement calling for the Senate to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’:

“America has come a long way in the 17 years since ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ first took effect. Today, the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs as well as a majority of the American people and a majority of our service members support the repeal of this outdated and discriminatory policy. Only one significant hurdle to its repeal remains – Senate passage of legislation that will allow brave Americans to serve in our military without regard to their sexual orientation. As such, I urge the Senate to end ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ once and for all. It’s what the American people want. It’s what our service members deserve. And it is what our national security demands. American troops should be focused on one thing and that is keeping our country safe. Once this passes, our troops will be able to continue on their vital mission.”

I heard on MSNBC's Hardball yesterday that the Republicans in the house who voted to reaepl HCR really have to explain to their constituents in their district on why they voted to reaepl, and why not reaepling their own congressional health care plans. As for me, I'm planning on enrolling in the Community Health Network in my area, so hopefully I'll be granted a card for it, even though there is a GOP gov. in my state who could likely care less about other people's right to health care (otherwise). It may be similar to the Free Clinics program Also, since I live with my folks at home, I already submitted my taxes and did not mark myself as a dependent, unlike last year when I applied but couldn't get the Community Health Network. Sadly, there have been occasions where I've tried to be resourceful and savvy about obtaining health coverage for CHN and at least once with Blue Cross Blue Shield, but I was denied coverage from CHN for being a dependent under my folks and having a pre-existing condition with BCBS where I was offering to pay them more money that I had at the time WTF?? The health insurance lobby certainly is one of the most anti-civil rights lobbies in America! You'd think that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 would make fairness the law of the land thru and thru. But NOOOOOOOOOO, profits trump fairness!
