FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Feb. 16, 2011
House Speaker Boehner has made his position clear. He plans to cut government spending regardless of the projected job loss the cuts would lead to. According to Scott Lilly at the Center for American Progress, Boehner’s proposed cuts would kill close to one million government jobs including teachers and public safety.
“If some of those jobs are lost in this, so be it,” Boehner said at a press conference yesterday.
He now is receiving criticism for his insensitivity. Todd Goodman, Chairman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, said this is no way to treat hardworking Americans regardless if they work in the private or public sector.
“Boehner’s statements reflect an underlying belief--those jobs, those one million people holding those jobs, don’t matter,” Goodman said. “While it is important to reign in our spending and make necessary cuts, it would be best to try to preserve as many jobs as possible. In addition, this may not be the most fiscally responsible policy regardless since the government may have to pay unemployment benefits to those we’re letting go yet we don’t have those creative minds and hardworking hands working for us.”
