Promises Kept: President Obama's First Two Years in Office
President obama and democrats in congress have taken historic steps to move america forward.
RECOVERY ACT
the recovery act has saved or created as many as 3.3 million jobs; boosted the american economy,
increasing gdP by as much as 4.5 percent in the 2nd quarter of 2010; and provided tax credits to 95 percent
of working families.
AFFORDABLE CARE ACT
the President enacted the affordable care act, which provides stability and security to americans who
have insurance and provides affordable options for those who don’t; lowers costs for families, businesses,
and our country as a whole; provides the largest middle class tax cut for health care in our history; and
prevents insurance industry abuses and denial of care.
WALL STREET REFORM
President obama enacted strong Wall Street reform. as a result of reform, americans will have the
information needed to make the best financial choices for their families; companies won’t be able to take
advantage of consumers with predatory practices; unexpected overdraft fees on checking accounts and
unfair increases to credit card rates will be banned; and the era of taxpayer-financed bailouts for Wall Street
banks is over.
ENDING COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAQ
President obama has ended our combat mission in iraq and removed nearly 100,000 troops so that we can
focus on fighting al Qaeda and rebuilding our nation at home.
NUCLEAR ARMS CONTROL
the President reached the most important arms control agreement with russia in two decades. New Start
will reduce our nuclear arsenals and put inspectors on the ground in russia and renews america’s leadership
in pursuit of a world without nuclear weapons. President obama also rallied the world behind a plan to
secure all nuclear material from terrorists within four years, fulfilling a key campaign promise.
MIDDLE CLASS TAX CUTS
President obama secured a bipartisan agreement extending critical tax cuts for middle class families,
helping those families to make ends meet and boosting economic recovery.
CREDIT CARD REFORM
the President signed bipartisan comprehensive credit card reform into law with the credit card
accountability, responsibility and disclosure act (card), which stops unfair credit card practices.
FAIR PAY FOR WOMEN
the President signed the lilly ledbetter fair Pay act, ensuring equal pay for equal work.
REFORMING STUDENT LENDING
the President enacted the Student aid and fiscal responsibility act (Safra), which increases federal Pell
grants and loans; makes investments in community colleges, historically black colleges, and other minority
Serving institutions; and caps student loan payments in keeping with graduates’ incomes.
REPEALING DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL
the President has repealed “don’t ask, don’t tell,” enabling individuals to serve in the american military
regardless of their sexual orientation.
