ODP Chair Todd Goodman's Response to the Rasmussen Poll

Statement from from Todd Goodman, Chairman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, in response to the recently released Rasmussen poll:

“Yes, we have seen the recent Rasmussen Poll out but we want to heavily warn voters against taking this poll seriously.  Many have reported on the conservative skew of the Rasmussen polls in the recent elections.

Political Scientist Alan Abramowitz from Emory University said Rasmussen polls are heavily skewed toward older, white republican voters.  In addition, Rasmussen themselves have admitted to a conservative screen.  Their polls are frequently funded by Republican candidates and the Republican National Committee, so it stands to reason the data may be tailored to tell those groups what they want to hear.

One example of Rasmussen’s skew is the U.S. Senate race in Colorado between Bob Schaffer and Mark Udall.  Rasmussen was the only pollster to ever show Schaffer with a lead, and they did it twice.  Throughout the rest of the campaign, Rasmussen’s data consistently showed a closer margin than any other poll, and the data missed the final result by four points.

The wide gap this poll shows between Fallin and Askins is completely outside the realm of reality. RGA out of Washington has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars into Oklahoma to buy ads supporting Fallin and falsely attacking Askins. If this was a shoo-in for Fallin, as this poll indicates, they would spend their resources in a more competitive race.

I maintain this is a close race as Jari Askins is the candidate who best represents Oklahomans.  She is working hard across the state and has a history of surprising people on election day with a victory.  I believe this year will not be any different, and on Nov. 2, Oklahomans will be looking at Jari Askins as their next governor.”

Meredith TurpinI am sick and tired of women throwing their "uterus" into the mix when it comes to the pro-choice/pro-life datebe. "It's my uterus, my body!" so they cry. Guess what it's one sole purpose is to create life. And Roe v Wade, like Jim Crow, is overbroad and overabused. Women who cry foul at the government controlling their bodies are also the same women running to the abortion table to get their "Day After" pill except it's not a day after, and a pill is no longer the solution. It's a month, or two, or three, when the tiny heart of a new life is already pumping. You made the grown up decision to have sex, you make the grown up decision to raise a child. I firmly believe there there should be exceptions to every rule, and as much so in this case for rape/incest/danger to the mother, but I'm appalled at how easily women dispose of their babies in this day and age. Pregnancy is not an inconvenience. A child is not an inconvenience. It's a life, just as alive and vibrant as you are. Women shutter at the thought of having the government tell them no when they can't say no themselves. Grow up!

The question of who voted last year is a really good one.It s like my dumb-ass sister-in-law (who is actually the most highly educated person in our family). She voted for Obama. When she told us she was going to vote for Obama we all explained to her how Obama was, essentially, a Socialist, and he would be dangerous. She quite literally responded with a comment along the lines of Well, I just think it s time for some change. One month ago, my stupid-assed sister-in-law sent me an email which explained that Obama is a Socialist. It was like she didn t even remember that we had told her that in the first place. It went in one ear and out the other.Bizarre.

Keep up the good work Obama. Keep laughing in the faces of Americans with comments like shovel ready wasnt so shovel ready . Keep lying, keep insulting our allies, keep passing laws and regulations that make it hard for business. It is too late to turn anything around now before 2012, so trying to move to the center will not help.I enjoy seeing these numbers get worse everyday, it gives me hope.

Now the Obamas are being Do Gooders to the Kenyans, telling them what not to feel embarrassed about. Now the unfortunatepeople of Kenya have to put up with Hope Change. Don t blame me, Kenya, I voted for McCain. This is like an updated version of The Gods Must Be Crazy, but that was just a Coke bottle. Michelle Obama is umteen times more unsettling!

Good question about the polls, roger, and I m more than glad to answer. The polls cited in this post were conducted by reputable companies (independent of their media sponsors, by the way) whose methods I ve never seen questioned anywhere else. Nor have I had cause to question them myself. But that s not the case with Rasmussen, whose methods have been widely criticized and are sometimes faulty for the reasons I cited in that previous post. I don t like polls that are skewed or unscientific, even if the results favor my own political views. Let me also note that I ve never had cause to question the methods used in polls commissioned by Fox News, despite the network s conservative bent. Fox, like most other major media, uses independent professionals for its polls and usually gets results that are not greatly unlike those in other polls. For example, the latest Fox poll on Obama s approval/disapproval ratings is in the ballpark with other polls. But Rasmussen s disapproval rating for Obama is 11 percentage points higher than the rating in the Fox poll. One other thing: I have publicly predicted that Obama s approval ratings inevitably will decine. It s a matter of political gravity. No president s poll numbers stay high forever.Read this:

Orlando: I m beginning to wonder if the shrillness and extremism of the attacks on Obama might actually be helping him in the polls. The stuff on the Fox Nutwork (no typo there) and on talk radio is way, way over the top, and I think lots of Americans recognize that. Limbaugh s ratings are up in the wake of the fuss over whether he s running the GOP, and Glenn Beck is pulling big numbers on Fox. These and other factors, I suspect, are creating a competition among right-wing media folks to see who can be the most incendiary and outrageous. All of this is harmful to conservatism in general and the Republican Party in particular. Reasonable conservatives, the kind who walk upright and breathe through their noses, are becoming embarrassed by all the invective. I ve got conservative friends who are downright appalled at some of the stuff they read and hear. Yeah, there s a revolution going on in American politics, and it s not the one the crazies had hoped for.

roger: Here s another interesting comparison of the polls from Fox News with those from Rasmussen. Fox News shows a spread of 26 percentage points between Obama s approval and disapproval ratings. In the Rasmussen poll, the spread is only 13 percentage points. Those polls were conducted at roughly the same time, which suggests that one of them is faulty and I don t think it s the Fox poll. The problem, as I noted in that previous post, is that Rasmussen uses a likely voters model, which is iffy in the best of circumstances and makes no sense at all when the next presidential election is fully 43 months away. Fox, on the other hand, polls registered voters, without regard for whether they seem likely to vote next time around. Some polls Gallup and Newsweek, for example survey American adults in general.
