Obama to Nation: Time to Turn the Page

Last night President Obama addressed the nation from the Oval Office to announce an end to combat operations in Iraq.

"The United States has paid a huge price to put the future of Iraq in the hands of its people," the President said. "... Through this remarkable chapter in the history of the United States and Iraq, we have met our responsibility. Now, it is time to turn the page."

Following the President’s address, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine released a statement, which echoed the President’s commitment to supporting our veterans.

“As the President has said, America’s commitment to our veterans is a sacred trust and upholding that commitment is a moral obligation.  To that end, this Administration is investing in a 21st century Veterans Administration that can meet the needs of veterans quickly and efficiently.  By funding the post-9/11 GI bill, President Obama is helping hundreds of thousands of veterans and their families to obtain a higher education.  In so doing, the President has demonstrated that while combat operations in Iraq have ended, our country’s dedication to those who served there never will.”

The Oklahoma Democratic Chairman, Todd Goodman, said this is an issue not just important to the nation at large but to many Oklahomans

“Our fighting men and women have completed every task we’ve asked of them, and we must honor their service and their sacrifices.  At home, we must serve our Veterans as they have served our Country.  Oklahoma, being a state with numerous military bases, we understand the importance and necessity to ensure these brave men and women are provided the support and respect they deserve upon their return. Whether that means making sure they have good jobs when they return home, expanded access to our state’s Universities, or comprehensive medical care, as the President reminded us, we should ‘serve them as faithfully as they have served us.’”
