Life's most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others?
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We take time today as a nation to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King's devotion to the causes of peace and justice helped forge equality and understanding for generations of Americans, and his dream inspires those fighting for those same causes around the globe.
Dr. King's legacy is one of giving a voice to the voiceless, of believing that helping the least among us benefits all of us, of fighting peacefully to change our lives for the better. These principles have fidelity to the founding of our nation and to the foundation of the Democratic Party.
Millions of Americans are taking this day to serve these principles by serving in their communities. For we know that Dr. King’s dream has not been fully realized in our own nation, nor in distant lands. The tragedy in Haiti reminds us that there are still places in this world in desperate need of a hand extended in charity and brotherhood. There are places where heartbreaking inequalities still challenge us to serve. Let us all open our hearts today and honor Dr. King and all who fought with him by performing an act of service for our fellow man.
