House Dems Ask for Governor to Condemn Rep. Kern’s Statements
Today, Rep. Mike Shelton (D-Oklahoma City), with Democratic support, moved for Rep. Sally Kern (R-Oklahoma City) be reprimanded for her racist and sexist comments made last week during debate on the House Floor. After being ruled out of order, and extensive conversations with Speaker Kris Steele, the motion to reprimand was heard. Rep. Sally Kern was publicly reprimanded by a vote of 76 to 16.
After the reprimand vote, House Democrats held a press conference in support of the reprimand and asked for Gov. Fallin to condemn the statements.
Todd Goodman, Chairman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party, said he stands with Democratic Leadership.
“As Leader Inman pointed out, Gov. Fallin was immediate in her response to a sexist joke made at a contentious school board meeting just weeks ago,” Goodman said. “Her failure to immediately address and condemn Rep. Kern’s comments to me is equivalent to condoning those statements. If we are to stand against racist and sexist mentalities, we must stand firm and be consistent. Gov. Fallin has yet to do so, and I would like to know why?”
